Thank You, Gregory!
A Tribute to Dance Legends
By Guy Adams

This fall Ann Marie will direct the premiere of Thank You, Greogry - A Tribute to Tap Legends, which debuts on October 2 at Penn State University, followed by a 10-week national tour. This fast-paced evening of entertainment for the whole family takes audiences on an educational journey into the variety inherent in the amazing art form of tap dance.  The piece explores how the late, great Gregory Hines brought serious attention to this vibrant art, and how he was a living link between the past, present, and the future.

Conceived by Tony Waag, Thank You, Gregory! stars Jason Samuels Smith (right) along with seven other of the most versatile, dynamic contemporary hoofers on the scene today.  Backed by a lively jazz trio, with multimedia projections and narrative, the evening explores a rich and diverse kaleidoscope of tap dance history, artistry, rhythms, and musical feet.

On November 2nd, Ann Marie will once again produce and direct what has become known as the “dance event of the season.” "America Dances! - Celebrating Our Sparkling Heritage: Broadway, TV & Film" is the theme of this year’s benefit gala for Career Transitions For Dancers.

The evening honors the roots of American dance and celebrates the diversity of entertainment that defines our America—past, present, and future. The evening will celebrate a cornucopia of styles from theater to concert dance, television and film in a vibrant homage to American culture.  A film montage scripted by PBS producer JoAnn Young and created by JoAnn and Ann Marie will honor our dance heritage.  The program will include a look at the new popularity of commercial dance on television that is furthering the growth and proliferation of dance in America.

Talent scheduled to participate includes American Tap Youth Ensemble, Laura Benanti, Bullettrun, Cedar Lake Dance Ensemble, Dance Times Square, Decadancetheatre, Nicole Fosse and an excerpt from Dancin’, Valerie Harper, The Lombard Twins, New York City Ballet, Samuel Ramey, Ann Reinking, Rock Steady Crew, Sonya Tayeh Dance, The Street Beats Group, A Tribute to Duke Ellington, and more!

About IN THE MIX!
Gettomade is a part of a larger show currently development called IN THE MIX!  The show explores the artistic process of creating a show by telling the story of each performer, some of whom are pioneers of their art form. IN THE MIX! explores the history of various dance genres as we watch artists mix and merge their styles together.

The Bell Witch:
An American Haunting

Later this year, look for an announcement about an exciting new project involving Ann Marie DeAngelo’s ballet The Bell Witch: An American Haunting.

The Nashville Ballet premiered the piece in 2003 and remounted it last year. The story is the most documented supernatural phenomenon in American history, with original music by Conni Ellisor.

A Tribute to Broadway

Ann Marie created A Tribute to Broadway, a new 45-minute work for Ballet de Monterrey, in collaboration with David Warren Gibson.  Unfortunately, the premiere had to be postponed due to the H1N1 flu outbreak in Mexico.  The piece will now have its premiere in the spring of 2010.  Stay tuned!

2009 Interview

Looking back on your performance career, what has been your most memorable moment? How did you get there?

I always look forward so it is hard to look back!  But, Robert Joffrey told me he’d never use me in his company because I was too short.  A few years later, as a principal dancer in the Joffrey, I was interviewed for Time Magazine - and the guy asked me what it felt like to be “short”.   I said, “I never felt short”.   In that moment I realized that it took unadulterated commitment, focus and great passion to get there.

Tell us about your involvement with Career Transition for Dancers. Did they influence your personal journey?

As a former board member for 12 years - and always working with dancers to further their careers, I was thrilled to find an organization committed to these goals and more.

Tell us the challenges (and any funny stories as well) about being a movement coach for Bette Midler.

I met her through Toni Basil.  She was more focused in ballet class than most dancers I teach today.

Being a principal dancer with Joffrey was....

......was influential to my current artistic aesthetic - that of diversity and appreciation for history.

You play so many roles: choreographer, artistic director, producer, teacher. What’s your favorite and why?

Each role competes with each other because I love them all.   But, being a multi-faceted artist  is to know that you can only do all things at once, if you do one thing at a time.

What is your wish for the next generation of performing artists?

To be much more committed to what is needed for creating  the “art” in performing.

Besides dance, you love…

Yorkies.
